Is the 3G broadband experience the same as broadband at home?

Currently, typical home broadband speeds are up to 8 Mbps, which is faster than 3G broadband, however the browsing experience is very similar. For the foreseeable future, fixed line broadband speeds are likely to remain faster than mobile broadband speeds however mobile broadband has the advantage that the user is not tied to a single location.

arrow
Is the speed of 3G broadband guaranteed?

No, it isn’t. The speed you get will depend on how far away you are from a transmitter, the number of people using the network and the type of network you're connected to. As the networks improve, you will automatically connect to the fastest network available.

How can I tell how much data I am using?

You can use Connection Manager to help you understand how much data you are using on the different networks. Look in Tools > Help > Log, and set the counter to which data network you want to use. The O2 data network will be shown as O2 UK. This count is per calendar month, and may not align to Pay Monthly customers’ billing day, but will give you an indicative view of how much you are using. Remember to select the option to view 'this months data usage'. Various factors, including other programmes running on your computer (e.g. automatic updates or compression software) may cause differences between the amount of data shown as transferred in the Usage Window and the transfer actually recorded by mobile networks. These differences may sometimes be substantial. Your monthly invoice is the only accurate record of usage.

arrow
Can I use my USB Modem in other laptops?

The service is designed to be individual to a specified user. However, you can use the USB Modem in other laptops if needs be. Connection Manager will need to be installed and you will still have the same data allowance - regardless of how many laptops you use. All usage will be combined on the single invoice.

I am in coverage but my connection seems slower than usual. Why might this be?

You may experience slow download speeds for a number of reasons, including:
a) Slow web sites - if you are browsing to a web site with a high number of visitors, you may find that it is unable to respond. You may see an error message or the site may be extremely slow. It may be best to visit the site during off peak times.
b) Programs running on the computer may be using an Internet connection in the background, for example Windows Update or anti virus software.
c) If there's a large number of users trying to access the Internet at the same time you may experience slow download speeds due to heavy network traffic. You may want to try using the service during off peak hours.
d) You may receive a slow service if your network coverage is poor. You should try moving the location of your mobile connect card or USB modem to a location with better coverage (for example, by a window) to check if this is the cause.
The flashing lights on the modem show you which network (GPRS, 3G, HSDPA) you are using when data is transferred.

I already have a data card with Connection Manager software loaded

It is likely this version of Connection Manager isn't compatible with the USB modem. You can check which version you already have in Connection Manager via Tools > Help > About. The correct versions that work with the O2 USB Modem are 3.2 R1 (281) or 3.2 R1 (312) . If you have the wrong version you need to uninstall it and then install the new version from the USB Modem.

I've installed Connection Manager but I can't launch it

Connection Manager may already be launched. The "-" and "x" buttons minimise Connection Manager to your Task Bar or System Tray but leave Connection Manager running. If you click on the Connection Manager icon in your System Tray it will appear on your screen.

arrow
Can I stop Connection Manager from starting each time I switch on my laptop?

Yes. You can change this setting by choosing Tools > Options > Preferences > General Prompts.

arrow
What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is a different type of network allowing users to connect to the internet wirelessly. Wi-Fi is generally the fastest network that the customer can connect to over Mobile Broadband

arrow
What is a hotspot?

A Wi-Fi hotspot is an internet access point in a public location such as a café or hotel where you can connect to the internet at broadband speed using a Wi-Fi enabled device. They broadcast a wireless frequency that connects your equipment to the location's internet connection.

arrow
What is The Cloud?

The Cloud is the name of the Wi-Fi network allowing O2 users to connect to the internet wirelessly.

arrow
How do I register to The Cloud?

There is a simple, one time, registration process. You have to go to a Cloud hotspot and Connection Manager will automatically launch the O2/Cloud landing page. You will need to enter the mobile phone number of your Mobile Broadband SIM and you will be registered. From then on you will automatically be connected to The Cloud when you are in a Cloud hotspot area.

arrow
Why do I get an error message when trying to connect to The Cloud?

The two main reasons for error messages are that you have input your Mobile Broadband number incorrectly or you already have a device registered to that number. For the latter, you should text WiFi to 2121 (you can do this from Connection Manager, provided you are connected to the O2 data network). This clears any validation of your Mobile Broadband SIM number to your laptop. This can take up to 30 minutes to do. After this you will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi. This re-connect will take you back to The Cloud landing page to register. Customers using a MAC will need to contact customer service to reset.

arrow
